Starting point

When it comes to producing a roadmap that depicts the execution of projects to uplift the Capabilities to deliver the Business Outcomes we must remember that we are doing so in the context of a Strategic Planning process. As such we use the term “Roadmap” which is completely different to term “Plan”.

Consider also that we are using the process and PLOT to model how we can implement the strategy to achieve the goals.

We tend to schedule the Projects and Features using Time-box approach where we use our judgement to set expectations as to the elapsed time that would be needed to undertake the activities.

Our Roadmap does not have resources, resource loadings, inter-activity dependencies, nor dependencies between Features. We use our own judgement as to what timebox we should decide on to undertake the activities within the feature.

Phasing

The other concept we use when developing a roadmap is to create theme-based Phases that set Timeboxes for activities that follow the same theme.

For example, if we use the Crawl, Walk, Run metaphor then we could apply it literally be defining 3 phases for the roadmap that signifies that the activities that are consistent with uplifting Capabilities to a “Crawl” level would happen together and likewise “Walk” and “Run”.

We might have a Three-Year expectation to realise the Goals, in this case we would set these dates for the canvas roadmap.

Within these dates we would define ach of the Phases and give them names that quickly described the Theme (per the Crawl, Walk and Run example).

We give each Phase a Date range that fit within the overall canvas roadmap time frame.

We can define Objectives and Key Results for each of the Phases.
